Women's Club soccer in college?

How competitive/how much of a time commitment is it to play for a college's club soccer team? I understand it's one tier above intramural, and one tier below varsity athletics. Are most of the players former club players? Kids who just played in their high schools? Just for fun players? My schools' website doesn't offer very many details and I don't want to show up at the tryouts if everyone is going to be really really good. Also, what level of conditioning should I expect to face going into it?
