Why do her lips swell after ?

I've been having regular with my girlfriend and sometimes her outer lips are slightly swollen after we're finished. It's usually slightly painful during so we seldom notice, but it gets sore after. We put sufficient lubrication when necessary, and I am usually gentle. Why is this so and is there a solution?
